GMT Composites (Bristol, RI, US) reports that it has fabricated what it believes is the world's longest fixed-length passerelle (boat boarding ramp), fabricated using a carbon fiber composite skin over a foam core.

At 7m in fixed length, the passerelle was made for an overseas luxury tour boat company that needed a long continuous length boarding solution with easy handling and exquisite looks. It is painted in two tone Awlgrip and non-skid paint, has teak cleats for additional safety, and integrated LED accent lighting. GMT Composites says the passerelle can safely hold a central load of 500 kg, while only deflecting 28 mm.

GMT notes that, typically, passerelles of more than 2.5m in length are made with a hinged joint for storage. GMT says it has made telescoping passerelles similar in length, but this is the longest continuous carbon fiber one the company has made or seen. At only 75 kg, it is lighter than steel or aluminum competitors, which eliminates the requirement for a mechanical davit. GMT also notes that the increased stiffness also provides a safer, more secure boarding experience for passengers.

GMT Composites was founded in 1984 and has specialized in carbon fiber composite innovation and new applications development. Non-marine projects range from products for Harvard-Smithsonian Astrophysics and robotic elements, to confidential military components. GMT has built carbon marine components for everything from Americas Cup and around-the-world race winners, to cruising vessels and classic wooden boats.
